working further with my setup I am making progress. Since I was unsatisfied with the overall shape (it was too uniform) I repeated the simulation at a higher resolution by doubling the hires noise from 3 to 6. Final cache was about 516GB large.

If you click through the gallery at a higher speed, you are able to see how the ground is being torn up to the sky by the mushroom cloud (almost like in reality).
